BDS is a war Israel can’t win

BDS is a war Israel can’t win

Israel’s apologists would call the BDS campaign “immoral”, but the slander is laughably false.

By Stanley L Cohen

Israeli think-tank fellow Yossi Klein Halevi, writing recently in the Los Angeles Times would have American readers believe that the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement is “immoral” and threatens the peace of “the region’s only intact society”, while simultaneously boasting it can’t touch Israel’s health and global economic integration.

Yet his reasoning from “morals” rings hollow, and amounts to little more than the shilling of the professional apologist industry deployed on Israel’s behalf throughout the Western media, in the never-ending defence of the oppressive status quo in Palestine.

Halevi excoriates BDS, disingenuously, for making the Jewish state “the world’s most pressing problem” today, while extolling Israel’s freedoms and national righteousness. Of course, his complaint manages to engage in both self-pitying and craven boosterism at the same time – a kind of perverse humble-brag.

No, Mr Halevi, Israel is not the world’s greatest problem – rather, Israel is Palestine’s great, existential, enduring problem for a people who have lived their whole lives under the constant, brutal and de-humanising occupation of this enlightened state.

Palestine’s ordeal

Most of the world has been content to overlook Palestine’s ordeal – fatigued by 68 years of this conflict, and understandably inured to the epic suffering of its people, who understand that their tragic condition can only hold its attention briefly.

The endless failed international “peace” efforts, the vicissitudes of negotiations, and periodic spasms of violence have become like the weather – always there.

This is precisely why the BDS movement has come to figure so prominently in Palestinian hopes – it side-steps the moribund “peace process” and banks on people-power as leverage against state and institutional power, applied against a responsive economy, such as Israel’s.

In the view of Palestinians, the state of Israel has never possessed legitimacy, not by international standards, as it was founded on expulsion, land-theft and military occupation. The BDS movement approaches this abstract issue by offering practicable action for citizens in the West, while the official international community dithers away the decades, leaving Palestinians worse off than ever before.

That such leverage should be applied to Israel is entirely justified. After all, autocratic dictatorships with closed economies, lacking – in Halevi’s celebratory words – “an independent judiciary, a free press, universal healthcare and religious freedom” are not typically responsive targets to protest campaigns for justice, like that of the BDS movement.

Citizens in America don’t propose a boycott of North Korea – the US government does that for them, making it illegal to do business with that outlaw state: yes, the very same US government which blocks every effort by the United Nations and international courts to address the illegality of Israeli settlements, military occupation, collective punishment, economic enslavement, and wholesale destruction and murder of a captive population.

Advantages of civil society

If America’s obstruction of international law did not shield Israel from accountability, there would be no need for BDS.

Because Israel possesses all the institutions and advantages of civil society, then presumably its economy and citizens would therefore be responsive to an effective grassroots campaign of boycott and economic push-back.

And if the campaign were to succeed, this same society might be expected to search its collective soul over its choices – and challenge its government’s policies.

This obvious point seems to have escaped Halevi, and others, who brand the movement as “immoral, because it perpetuates the lie that Israel is solely or even primarily to blame” for the Palestinian condition. Yet if we look around the room, who else is there?

Who attacks Palestinians’ cities with warplanes and tanks, walls them in, isolates them from contact with the world, cuts off their electricity, destroys their infrastructure, takes their water, and builds on their land after evicting them?

Who puts their teenagers in jail, takes their farms, cuts down their olive trees? It isn’t North Korea; it isn’t Putin’s Russia; it isn’t a rapacious China. Israel is the author of the present Palestinian condition, as it has been for decades, with its American backers, and there isn’t much point rehashing the failure of Camp David, or Oslo, or the Palestinian leadership since 1936, or 1948, or 1967.

BDS leaves that debate to “think-tank” intellectuals like Halevi and others. Justice for the Palestinians will not be achieved through debating societies.

BDS offers to its supporters a non-violent, crowd-sourced, material response to the intransigence of Israel and her rampant, continuing illegality. Israel’s apologists would call the campaign “immoral”, but the slander is laughably false.

The logic of justice

BDS compels no one to join it; it constrains no one but by force of reason, and the logic of justice.

In Halevi’s topsy-turvy morality, it is the BDS movement that sins against moral law, in persuading people, institutions and governments to vote with their wallets and their consciences on the rights of Palestinians – rather than Israel, which claims legitimacy to the world, even as it continues to build new settlements on Palestinian land, and subjugates its people to military occupation, dispossession and violence, in violation of international law.

The propagandists of Israeli power understand all too well that BDS is the first clear-eyed, internationalist movement of people – not governments, not Western “quartets”, not the UN Security Council – to look at Palestine with fresh eyes and accurate information. It demands that until Israel ceases its occupation and oppression of millions of Palestinians, there cannot, and should not, be any “business as usual” with the regime.

If Israeli critics want to smear BDS as “bigoted” – a dog-whistle for “anti-Semitic” – because of its endorsement of the Palestinian Right of Return, let them address the historical truth: at least 800,000 Palestinians were expelled en masse, in the creation of the Israeli state – that number has since grown to 7,000,000 stateless refugees with another 4 million internally displaced within their own nation.

No effort has ever been made by official Israeli society to acknowledge and address this simple reality – that many elderly Palestinians living in UN camps, or Gaza City slums, or the West Bank, remember their homes in places such as Jaffa, Yibna, or the numerous towns and villages erased from the map.

It serves no use to deny this fact – perhaps a good starting point for intellectuals like Halevi would be in saying, yes, it is not too late to admit those rights and seek redress, together with the Palestinians.

BDS is brave enough to put the Right of Return up front, as a moral position; if Israel were ready to move forward, it could do the same. Who knows – perhaps good things could come from starting from the truth.

And what of Israel’s boast of its progressive freedoms? They do not withstand scrutiny in the slightest – religious freedom, for example, is under clear attack for every Muslim who wishes to worship at al-Aqsa, or travel to Jerusalem, or leave Gaza and return again, with access routinely denied.

Through Israeli military travel bans on Palestinians, families are separated, unable to worship or observe religious rituals together, or attend the mosque of their choice.

Likewise, any progressive Reform Jew or Jewish American visiting will tell you that Orthodox Judaism does not welcome them, either – Israel’s Rabbinate monopolises official control over the very legitimacy of being Jewish, and denies marriage rights to thousands of couples, even going so far as to jail couples marrying illegally, or rabbis conducting such ceremonies.

Orthodox cultural control

Under Orthodox cultural control in Jerusalem and elsewhere, women are subordinated literally to a “back of the bus” status, and segregated without access to full social freedom and the right to work.

As for an independent judiciary, Palestinians never see it, instead enduring the injustices of military courts and the state security apparatus leaving thousands of them including children as permanent political detainees denied the most fundamental rights, while its civil courts refuse jurisdiction over Palestinian complaints.

And Israel’s “free press” leaves much to be desired. Halevi appears to be ignorant of the targeting of Palestinian journalists in recent years for arrest and prosecution in military courts under “incitement” laws; or the Israeli Defence Forces’ censoring of social media in the Occupied Territories.

The absurd equivocation of  Halevi and his colleagues in the “Love Israel” industry hits a shrill note, asking American readers to accept that the BDS movement “is itself a crime”.

But free and open debate of the true status of Israeli occupation in Palestine, and the organising efforts to convince states, businesses and people to stop investing in Israel’s bloody enterprise, is hardly criminal. In America, it is known as “the marketplace of ideas”.

We are all free to argue for justice as we see it, and BDS has had more than a decade of mounting success because its arguments convince reasonable people of the truth – no one is buying any more the tired, old brand of “Israel, the Enlightened Democracy”.

BDS is the brave and steady labour of people of conscience to move the stalled, bogus “peace process” forward by applying economic pressure, plain and simple.

The old narrative of a blameless Israel, fighting off Palestinian “terrorists”, is a hard sell, and BDS will continue to build on its successes because Israel’s defenders can no longer suppress the truth, or sweep it under some wishful fantasy of a benevolent, progressive Israel that doesn’t exist, and never has.

Dying In Succession {Dedicated to Mohammed Al-Qeeq}

{Reprint from May, 2012. Little has changed. Prisoners still hunger strike.  Israel attempts force feedings.. only legally now. Suffering continues, Enhanced Interrogations” continue, “Administrative Detentions” continue at an ever growing pace… and Western media continues to ignore it all as they persist in covering up reality about the black hole prisons and GITMO.

Now, the latest detainee, since November of 2015, journalist Mohammed Al-Qeeq (33), is expected to die at any moment.  This is day 77 of his hunger strike.  This reprint is dedicated to him.}

Dying In Succession

by M. Dennis Paul, Ph.D. Salem-News.com

A few days ago, Ma’an News reported on the family protests in front of the Presidential headquarters in Ramallah. Ma’an News was one of only a few outlets that bothered to report. Here, in the US, it took over 2 months before any mainstream media outlet mentioned the hunger strike among prisoners in Israel. Still, such mention is but a whisper. While much of Europe, Africa and Asia and even Central and South America are aware of the strike, the names of some of its participants, the purpose and the backlash from the Israeli prison system and courts, citizens in the US, less than 1%, have a clue. The “greatest” democracy in the world, front man for the “only” democracy in the Middle East, purposely keeps its citizens ignorant. Why?

The easy answer is that such things are not news. People don’t care about such prisoner antics. They are in prison, after all. That’s the easy cover. Keeping this perception alive is essential to maintaining ignorance.

What possible good would it do to write articles that cover some of the base reasons as to why these people are prisoners? It would open a great big can of thinking about such things as democracy, human rights, dignity, repression, torture, occupation, prejudice and all those many other issues that real people in the very real world actually face. In the US, such matters are okay in novels and movies where they have entertainment value. Reporting on actual existence… reality… is something completely different. When it comes to reporting on something that casts light on the abundant negative acts of the “only” democracy in the Middle East, it is imperative that the “greatest” democracy in the world do everything in its power to clamp a lid on that can. All hell would break loose if people there, or here, ever began to question what they are taught is “democracy”.

Bilal Diab and Thaer Halahleh. Both now near death; blood seeping through their gums and eyes and noses, erratic heart beats, blood dripping from their bowels. Both prisoners with names and faces and families. Both refusing nutrition for over 70 days. Prisoners. Only they have never been charged with any crime. Never been brought to trial. The Israeli high court denied their petition, earlier this past week, to be charged or released. Netanyahu and the prison authorities refuse to transfer them to hospitals because they believe they have seen worse.

Khader Adnan. His 66-day strike ended in Feburary of this year after his detention was not extended by Israeli authorities. Hana Shalabi was banished to Gaza (not allowed to go home) after her hunger strike which lasted over 40 days and brought her so close to death Israeli officials made both sides of an “agreement” for her release.

They are, or were, prisoners only through Administrative Detention… A method adopted by Israel and the US to hold individuals indefinitely without charge or trial, to deny them any access to evidence or attorneys (in many cases), to deny them any basic human rights without recourse. The cover (justification) for such detention is that these individuals are so dangerous that to afford them any opportunity to defend themselves would expose the intelligence operations of the respective states (United or Israel). That is the standard answer given by mouthpieces for government like Mark Regev.. perhaps the most accomplished liar on record in Israel. There are over 300 Palestinians, alone, being held under these phony pretenses. The numbers of Egyptians, Lebanese, Syrians and others remains unknown.

Mark Regev insists, “This strike is not about human rights. This strike is being led by hardcore Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The leaders of this strike are people who’ve been directly responsible for brutal acts of terror against innocent civilians, people who blown up people in pizza parlors in coffee shops on school buses,” … except no one has ever produced a single shred of evidence to support Regev’s claims.

To advance the “extreme danger to Israel” narrative, Regev carefully ignores the fact these prisoners are striking for an end to abusive solitary confinement, for family visitation rights and access to books and education among other issues.

Regev claims. “If one of these hunger strikers commits suicide, you could have an instigation of violence which no one wants to see, “The concern is that Islamic Jihad and Hamas have an interest in violence.” In his twisted little mind, representing the national logic of Israel, non-violent protests are incitement to violence. If a man dies in prison, it is, apparently, more an incitement to violence than IDF attaching car batteries to the genitals of young Palestinian boys, or beating them and threatening to rape their mothers and sisters. Apparently this would be more an incitement than shooting tear gas canisters directly into the skulls of unarmed protesters or battering them with rifles or shooting them with rubber coated or uncoated live ammo or kicking in the doors of villagers who are asleep and turning their houses upside down, stealing their property or perhaps giving them hours or minutes to evacuate so that their homes can illegally be handed over to “settlers”.

The media of the “greatest” democracy do not want it known that the vast majority of the prisoners held in Israeli prisons are there because they are Palestinians and nothing more. They are imprisoned because of a program of disruption and demoralization purposely designed and conducted by Israel to destroy the fabric of Palestinian families, villages, and existence. For many years, Israel has made it a daily task for IDF to round up handfuls of Palestinians in their own lands on the feeblest of charges, route them to jails far away from their families and villages, refuse them lawyers, convict them in Israeli courts under laws that apply only to them, and later refuse them visits from family. Some are placed in solitary confinement for months on end and torture is very well documented. Threats of rape and harm to their families as well actual assaults on families and theft from their homes are commonplace acts of the IDF. Putting their best foot forward in response to the strikers, the prison authorities have ruled that prisoners will only be allowed access to their attorneys if they present themselves for the daily prisoner counts.

The media of the “greatest” democracy do not want it known that this “hunger strike” is a last resort for an oppressed people who, having been told the world would back them if they gave up violence as a means to attain freedom from the evil grip of Israel and who then created the largest non-violent movement in history, have been marginalized or completely ignored in their struggle for basic human rights. No…that media instead wants to pretend for all its readers that these are just prisoners.. savage, brutal and highly dangerous prisoners. There are now over 2000 prisoners in Israeli jails who are refusing nutrition.

Are the protests outside the Presidential headquarters in Ramallah helping to resolve the demands of the protesters and end the strike? Even the Ma’an News articles appear to be confused. On one hand, the protesters are expressing solidarity with the hunger strikers. On the other, they are asking the Palestinian “Authority” to explain what they are doing about the strike and the conditions of the prisoners.

Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas), thus far, has said only that the prisoners are his greatest concern and that the PA is focusing on settling this issue. This, with the addition of ,”This is a serious matter. If one prisoner dies, it will be dangerous”, is all he has said. No explanations. No offering to the families of prisoners as to what exactly he or the PA have done or are doing.. or planning to do.

Instead, the actions of Mazen, which have always spoken more truthfully than his mouth, show him spending his time waiting for a response to a wasted letter he sent to Netanyahu through a 3rd party… yet another stall related to the disingenuous “peace” process… in which he again asks for a restart to the charade with a veiled threat to again pursue action through the UN should Netanyahu offer nothing substantial. Of course, Mazen ignored the immediate response which came in the form of Netanyahu pushing for legitimization of 3 more illegal settlements as well a separate settlement declared illegal by an Israeli high court. Never mind that such a veiled threat speaks so loudly to the fact he never had intention to follow through with the UN on behalf of his own people.

Mazen is seen spending much time having dinners with representatives of UN offices seeking some restart of the “talks”, reshuffling his illegal cabinet in an effort to create a new illegal government with himself remaining as illegal president, thus avoiding promised elections which he has successfully stalled for the past 6 years, and attempting to create a “unity” government with Hamas in which he obtains a Prime Minister position. Of course, he is always working to secure more money to operate his illegal government which, according to him, is severely stressed financially despite the millions that come its way each month from a wide variety of sources including the US, Israel, the EU and other Arab nations. Not surprising is that no one but he and his close officials get to see the actual books.

Israel, then, has no intentions of settling the prisoner issues so long as they can persuade the already morally bankrupt that it is a national security issue and the PA has no intention of working to settle the prisoner issue as it is not a benefit to either their pocket books or Mazen’s desire to become King of Palestine (once Israel has, with his help, turned the West Bank into Swiss cheese [with Palestine existing within the holes] and Gaza into a toxic waste dump).

Over the next few weeks, the protesters will begin to die in succession. Most of them will be young men who have never had any genuine opportunity to experience life. Israel will use their demise as an excuse to tighten its stranglehold on both the WB and Gaza and the PA will use these deaths in an appeal for more money from whatever sources will listen to Mazen’s lies and buy into his deceit. These young folks will end their lives having, in the sick minds of both Israel and the PA, more value dead than alive.

Some supporters of Palestine believe the strike deaths will create unity and intensify solidarity. They project the Palestinians will double their non-violent efforts to end the occupation by Israel. Too, the world will take notice and more pressure will be put upon Israel internationally to end the occupation.

In a world that idly stands by while the US murders and maims thousand of women and children with the illegal use of drones, idly stands by while entire nations are inundated with depleted uranium guaranteed to kill, maim and deform for decades to come, and conducts global think tanks on how to suppress citizenry legally protesting criminal banks and corporations… I have my doubts.

PA Prime Minister, Salam Fayyad, recently commented that Palestinians have to get their own house in order before making any move toward their goal for independence. Breaking from Abu Mazen (there appears to be a bit of friction between them) he has called for Palestinians to go forward with plans for a general election. Still playing politics for his own ends, Fayyad points fingers at Hamas for the lack of unity between Gaza and the West Bank.

What I am certain needs to happen, for Palestine to have any chance at all, is an internal uprising to eliminate Abu Mazen and the corrupt Palestinian Authority. Their continued existence promises a tragic end for Palestine.

At His Hypocritical Best…

{Reprint from May, 2011. No less true than when first penned. Obama is a professional liar, hypocrite and murderer.}

At His Hypocritical Best…
President Obama Distorts Obvious Reality In His Speech To The State Department And The World, Portrays Himself And His Predecessors As Folk Heroes, And In A Few Sentences Assures Israel Will Once Again Wage War Against Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt And Any Measure Of Sanity

by M. Dennis Paul, Ph.D. Salem-News.Com
From the first paragraph and on through nearly every following passage, President Obama astonishingly portrays his inability (or unwillingness) to speak openly and honestly regarding any aspect of strife and confrontation in the Middle East/Africa or the part(s) his government (which unfortunately must also be called “ours”) and that of his immediate predecessors has and will play.

Perhaps he honestly believes Hillary will go down in history as one of the finest Secretaries of State. He’s entitled to his beliefs. However, the once idealistic Hillary sold out many years ago and if a true history is ever written will surely go down as just one of many disingenuous corporate hoars that sold out their nation in this generation. Of course, that is just my opinion (and I am entitled). That’s my response to the start of his speech.

The second paragraph accurately sets the tone of the proliferation of lies and deceit to be found in the remainder of his speech. The President talks about the changes which “began” roughly six months ago in the middle east/Africa and attempts to impress that these changes are instigated by the “people” of the nations in struggle. There is, of course, no mention of the hand the CIA and other agent provocateurs played in several of the uprisings. He states that more leaders, beyond the two already removed, may soon “step down” completely avoiding acknowledging the death warrants and threats against several leaders still in power. In other news… disconnected from this pontification, Obama is heralded for making such threats and we are reminded how he signed and executed the death warrant for Osama bin Laden. No discussion is present explaining how one uprising takes precedent over another in warranting US involvement. Neither is there reference to use of drones or the legalities of cross border excursions (however, there will be some telling comments further on).

Obfuscation being a hallmark of “good” pontification (such as the very recent findings of the self-conducted investigation into the Catholic Church’s abuse of young boys in which they declare it was not a matter of Pedophilia since the majority of boys were over the age of 10), he attempts to explain US positions based on “..the forces of economics and security; history and faith. “. We can give him a little credit for making economics first in the line up. Facts are facts, however, and the facts here are that the economics involved are those of gains desired by multinational corporations at the expense of those who will obtain no benefit… the nations being raped by our military.. you and I. Factually, the forces of note are really economics, corporate greed, self interest and more corporate greed. Faith, security and history are nothing more than grossly over used subterfuge

Put boots on as we wade through the stench puddle forming the next passages. “Change”… That’s a word Obama exploited throughout his campaign to become President. “Change we can believe in” . A good many hurting and scared people bought into this exploitation. Here, in this paragraph under review, Obama again suggests “change”. As we have learned (at least some of us), what usually follows the exploited word is a vast sea of nothing and if one continues to read through the entire speech, it becomes evident that Obama is a master sailor on a sea of nothingness. What we get, instead of any references to genuine change or even projects designed to implement some manner of genuine change, is typical reference to “our values” and “our security”… and then a reiteration of the status quo which has no genuine bearing on the lives of you or me other than that more of our rights are eroded as we are subliminally led to applaud those, in other countries, standing up for their rights. We are then quickly led to wade through rhetoric regarding the “progress” his administration has made in ending two fruitless wars. Sure, 100,000 troops were removed from Iraq… many replaced by mercenaries. It remains, however, an intentional misstatement of fact to call this “change” an end to our combat mission there. The pictures and comments coming directly from Iraqi citizens makes it clear that “changing” the references to deaths, dismemberments, destruction et al to “Police Actions” does not really alter the facts… it is combat.. it is daily.. and the death toll is worse, not better than when Obama honestly called it “combat”. The remaining troops and the mercenaries are not unarmed and are not running away from gunfire.. not driving around in Police cruisers and not wearing badges. A rose is a rose and BS is BS, Mr. President.

How Obama can claim we have broken the Taliban’s momentum in Afghanistan when we continue to pay them for passage on the highways, continue to pay them for construction rights in the villages, continue to protect their opium shipments and continue to conduct almost every manner of business imaginable with them.. fighting off only the enemies of our “enemies”… is beyond belief. Either he is getting the idiot’s briefings every morning or he has daily tissue removal from his nose. The cost of the war has not altered downward.. it has increased. Somehow this is offered to us as a sign of success? If the public believed the troop withdrawal scam from Iraq, they will buy the same regarding Afghanistan. Watch the news… the mercenaries double every month. Click the heels of your government issue boots and repeat.. “the combat missions are over”. And, of course, he ends this passage reminding us of how devastating the murder of Osama was to the known handful of existing al Qaeda. No mention of the hundreds of thousands of innocent women, children, elderly etc that were murdered as we ostensibly scoured Afghanistan for bin Laden.

In the next paragraph, one simply has to replace bin Laden with “Bush/Obama” and we get the other side of the story… a bit more true than the original. (Altered for the readers’ weary eyes) “Bush and Obama are not martyrs. They are mass murderers who offer a message of hate – an insistence that Muslims took up arms against the West, and that violence against men, women and children is the only path to change. They rejected democracy and individual rights for Muslims and Americans in favor of violent extremism; their agenda focused on what they could steal or destroy – not what they could build.”

Obama then distorts the entire politics of the region through insinuating al Qeada in each Middle East/African nation and then re-states this falsehood carried to its most useful-to-Obama conclusion of a people deciding the irrelevance of their (al Qeada’s) presence and influence. Forget that it is a blatant lie and makes virtually no sense in context to what the Arab Spring represents.. Obama found it useful. It boils down to Obama attempting to sell us bin Laden’s death as being a devastating blow to an irrelevant “organization” that we spent billions tracking, tortured hundreds to extract useless info about, and murdered hundreds of thousands in attempts to destroy. Never mention that Reagan created bin Laden.. never. And don’t attempt to explain how, in this fantasy, al Qaeda was influencing the dictators in the Middle East and Africa. Just use this absurd platform as a segue into the all powerful (and over used) anecdotal “people” stories. Confuse the subject and sheeple will follow.

Obama tells, in brief, about a cart merchant being abused and then dousing himself and setting himself on fire. It happens every day, Obama says, that the poor subjects of dictators and corrupt governments are abused. It’s true. Take Palestine (Which Obama avoids at all cost) where fishermen are chased and shot at by IDF, where farmers are shot and killed trying to harvest their crops, where school kids are shot walking to or from school because IDF suspects their lunch pails… But Obama, rather than identify the severe treatment of Palestinians by Israel, uses this portion of his folk hero type recollection of people yearning for freedom to attempt yet more distortions with a claim of colonialism having ended some 50 years ago yet oppressed people still looking at the west as subjugator and stating “Antagonism toward Israel became the only acceptable outlet for political expression. “. This is the view of history Obama supports? The world is wrong for seeing the west as a major cause of disruption and chaos in the world? That despite never ending intrusion into the affairs of other nations, even to the point of establishing US military bases in them after bombing them into a most unrecognizable mass with no plans to ever leave, the world is wrong to think of the US, Britain, France as colonizers? That the world is wrong to view Israel’s oppression, displacement and theft, destruction and rape of Palestine as oppression, displacement, theft, rape and destruction?

From here, Obama goes on with more people stories and folksy aphorisms about “change” and begins to address the Israeli/Palestine issue… by simply reiterating “standing up for Israel’s security and pursuing Arab-Israeli peace. “. Ok.. so he really doesn’t address it here.

He states things such as..”America’s interests are not hostile to peoples’ hopes; they are essential to them.” (Which is why the US is despised in so many countries today.) “We believe that no one benefits from a nuclear arms race in the region, or al Qaeda’s brutal attacks”. (Which is why we favour one state over another regarding nuclear energy and munitions and helped Israel hide the fact of their production and still help them avoid becoming signatory to any treaties they demand others sign.) “People everywhere would see their economies crippled by a cut off in energy supplies. As we did in the Gulf War, we will not tolerate aggression across borders, and we will keep our commitments to friends and partners.” (Well, this one is a bit strange as it only implies Gulf War I and the (US approved) attack on Kuwait by Sadam. It doesn’t come right out and say it. One would hardly expect Obama to admit Sadam [who had long been both a “friend” and “partner”] was tricked but that really doesn’t matter here. What does matter, however, is this bit about not tolerating cross border aggression while at the same time crossing multiple borders with either troops, drones, mercs, or agents.. all of which have been happening in the Middle East and Africa for a long time. The standard response is that what THE US DOES IS DIFFERENT.. AND LEGAL… BECAUSE THEY ARE FIGHTING A “WAR AGAINST TERRORISTS”. Logic, of course, does not prevail with such thinking.)

Obama continues with …”failure to speak to the broader aspirations of ordinary people will only feed the suspicion that has festered for years that the United States pursues our own interests at their expense.” (Suspicion? No, Mr. President, it is fact and there exists volumes of evidence to support this… Volumes, some of which, you conspire to withhold in order to protect your predecessors.. and now yourself, from prosecution.) “Given that this mistrust runs both ways – as Americans have been seared by hostage taking, violent rhetoric, and terrorist attacks that have killed thousands of our citizens – a failure to change our approach threatens a deepening spiral of division between the United States and Muslim communities.” (One has only to ask why.. and the answer comes that American corporate interests have trampled the cultures and human rights of these people and the natural consequence to this is the uprising.. the dissent.. and the defenses you , Mr. President, alluded to earlier in your speech.)(And a bit further down, readers will become aware of something remarkably contradictory to this rhetoric of “change” that slides off the President’s tongue like post nasal drip unconsciously expressed.)

The broadening of scope and interest Obama mentions with regard to Cairo are no less corporate than those of his predecessors and there is little he can genuinely demonstrate as being in the interest of the common man. This is simply more rhetoric attempting to portray himself a hero. It fails and the people of Egypt are not buying it. He failed to mention that. The corporations like his vision far more than the people .

The next several paragraphs are more rhetoric and absolutely empty statements when it is more clearly apparent the US is being selective with whom it will support and how. A rather remarkable example (among many others such as the use of force and death warrants in Libya), literally announced as Obama was spewing this collection of incoherent fables, foibles, and flatulence, clearly demonstrates the degree to which he is willing to say one thing.. giving an impression of “change”.. while doing something to ensure the exact opposite.

US quietly expanding defense ties with Saudis
By ROBERT BURNS
AP National Security Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite their deepening political divide, the United States and Saudi Arabia are quietly expanding defense ties on a vast scale, led by a little-known project to develop an elite force to protect the kingdom’s oil riches and future nuclear sites.
The U.S. also is in discussions with Saudi Arabia to create an air and missile defense system with far greater capability against the regional rival the Saudis fear most, Iran. And it is with Iran mainly in mind that the Saudis are pressing ahead with a historic $60 billion arms deal that will provide dozens of new U.S.-built F-15 combat aircraft likely to ensure Saudi air superiority over Iran for years.
Together these moves amount to a historic expansion of a 66-year-old relationship that is built on America’s oil appetite, sustained by Saudi reliance on U.S. military reach and deepened by a shared worry about the threat of al-Qaida and the ambitions of Iran. (Read the entire article at http://hr.s4.sl.pt )

How believable does this man think he is when at the very moment he is challenging such relationships before the State Department.. and the world… it is announced that he is, in fact, pumping billions of dollars to maintain and enhance such relationships?

Further responding to each paragraph in the President’s speech becomes, at this point, an exercise in repetitively pointing out his lies and stating what by now should be obvious truths… essentially, the opposite of whatever he says. It also becomes an exercise in repetitively exposing the pseudo arcane logic of Mr. Obama. Starting at the point in his speech where he begins, “So we face an historic opportunity. We have embraced the chance to show that America values the dignity of the street vendor in Tunisia more than the raw power of the dictator. There must be no doubt that the United States of America welcomes change that advances self-determination and opportunity.” and continuing for a few brief paragraphs, I would ask the reader to simply say the word “Palestine” to him/her self after each passage. In doing so, the falsity of each statement will become apparent. One can also add “so long as it does not interfere with our (US) plans” either before or after statements.
Following, Obama factually distorts the occurrence of violence in Libya and the formation of a unified commission governing the rebels. Sadly, people will remain in confusion regarding what has actually transpired in Libya and why. Writers are just now exposing the mountains of dirt behind this “uprising”. As a writer with contacts in Libya, it took several weeks and the loss of 3 sincere friends before the cloud lifted (for me) and the truth began to emerge. To say that I became discouraged is an understatement. The sickness from which the US, France and several other greedy nations operate knows no bounds.
Obama touches upon each country and what he believes they must do and not do. He points harsh fingers at the abuses of their leaders and presents a number of veiled threats. What he does not do, is point those fingers at the worst of abusers.. Israel. It is as if he simply cannot see the Palestinian people, cannot hear the weapons fired at them, cannot hear the screams of horror as they suffer and die. There are only the cries of Israelis.

“So in the months ahead, America must use all our influence to encourage reform in the region. Even as we acknowledge that each country is different, we will need to speak honestly about the principles that we believe in, with friend and foe alike.” Following this comment, Obama talks about fulfilling commitments “to build networks of entrepreneurs, and expand exchanges in education; to foster cooperation in science and technology, and combat disease. Across the region, we intend to provide assistance to civil society, including those that may not be officially sanctioned, and who speak uncomfortable truths. And we will use the technology to connect with – and listen to – the voices of the people.” On the ground, however, the examples are the arrests and prosecutions of whistleblowers, FBI raids on legitimate organizations, GITMO, renditions, bribery, no bid contracts, turning a blind eye to illegal trespasses and piracy, long standing violations of international law, illegal blockades and illegal settlements, cross border shooting of unarmed protesters, and investment in missile defense programs, fighter purchases, tanks, missiles, tear gas, grenades, and a host of other projects and programs that fail to resemble schools, hospitals, labs etc. A 60 billion dollar arms deal is not an incentive to cultural or economic growth… no matter how one attempts to cloak it in words.

After so much more rhetoric, Obama gets to the world bank and monetary funds. What he says amounts to nothing new. More illusion of “change”. It is just rehashing of the way business has been conducted for several decades. The offers look reasonable and appear to provide some hope to impoverished nations. Then reality sets in and inevitable defaults occur. Obama offers no real change. These are nothing more than the carrots through which nations are controlled for the rapings by greedy industrialists and corporations. Haiti is a prime example. It is very telling that a head of the IMF is arrested for raping a black chamber maid. The microcosm mirroring the macro…
As one reads further, offerings rapidly change tone and become obvious controls.. through trade, credit, investment.. all those things that came with the last aid packages to these countries.. and failed.
Finally, the President comes to his plans for Israel and Palestine. Here, amid his representations of the controlling force for peace in all parts of the world (Remember Phil Ochs’ “Cops of the World”) Obama shows himself as either being the biggest fool on the planet by conditioning peace on the several aspects of historical strife guaranteed to garner resistance and refusal by both sides or the mastermind behind some secretive plan (Hail Illuminati!!) to cause World War III. Either way, he proves himself a psychotic threat to the world.
The manner in which he frames the concerns of both sides shows a clear lack of understanding dipped in a coating of Israeli dollars so desperately needed to help him remain President for another term. Only an extremely biased asshole could frame this situation in such a way that the Israelis are “living with the fear that their children could get blown up on a bus or by rockets fired at their homes, as well as the pain of knowing that other children in the region are taught to hate them.” while the Palestinians are “ suffering the humiliation of occupation, and never living in a nation of their own.” Remember I said earlier that it is as if he cannot see or hear the Palestinians? Having access to the data collected by his CIA and other agencies, Obama surely knows that far more Palestinians are murdered each year by Israeli soldiers and that the vast majority of Palestinians are unarmed. http://hr.zt.sl.pt He would also be aware that Israel used over 3,000 tons of bombs and projectiles (some containing internationally-banned substances) during its war on the Gaza Strip. http://hs.0d.sl.pt He would also know that numerous Palestinians are killed each month by Israeli air strikes and that the Palestinians have no air force. It is a given that Mr. Obama is aware of these facts yet chooses to ignore them. Instead, he attempts to portray to the world that Israelis, not Palestinians, live in fear and lose lives and suffer major property destruction and have to live with the thought that Palestinian kids are taught to hate them. http://hs.27.sl.pt

“As for Israel, our friendship is rooted deeply in a shared history and shared values. Our commitment to Israel’s security is unshakeable. And we will stand against attempts to single it out for criticism in international forums. But precisely because of our friendship, it is important that we tell the truth: the status quo is unsustainable, and Israel too must act boldly to advance a lasting peace.”

SO, TELL THE TRUTH, MR. PRESIDENT! TELL THE TRUTH! Don’t waste your breath and our time with passage after passage of blatant lies. I sincerely doubt that even AIPAC finds Obama remotely convincing. The history and values shared with Israel are a history of deceit and deception and a lack of any genuine values as exampled by the daily abuses toward Arabs overlooked or denied and even a willingness to allow brave US men to die at the hands of these “friends” (NEVER FORGET THE U.S.S.LIBERTY, Mr. President! That is history!).

“As for security, every state has the right to self-defense, and Israel must be able to defend itself – by itself – against any threat. Provisions must also be robust enough to prevent a resurgence of terrorism; to stop the infiltration of weapons; and to provide effective border security. The full and phased withdrawal of Israeli military forces should be coordinated with the assumption of Palestinian security responsibility in a sovereign, non-militarized state. The duration of this transition period must be agreed, and the effectiveness of security arrangements must be demonstrated.”

How can a man, purported to be of very high intelligence, make such blatant hypocritical statements such as this and hold his head up publicly? Every state has the right to self defense… only Palestine is the exception? (Sure.. it’s not a state and we intend to veto any attempt to make it one until Israel, perhaps a hundred years from now, agrees to internationally accepted borders). Israel must be able to defend itself, by itself (buffered by billions of dollars and tons of weapons supplied by US)? Palestine can, as it has been doing, continue to defend itself by throwing its young in front of bullets and tossing stones? Only Israel faces threat? Really, Mr. Obama?? Really??

Within hours, Bibi rejected the 1967 borders. Everyone knew this would happen. Everyone. This was the initial set up for failure. This, coupled with the back-asswards thinking of attempting to premise negotiations about a Palestinian state with a threat that the US will thwart any attempt to appeal for statehood and where discussion about the defining relevant disagreements (Jerusalem and the right of return) are left to be addressed at the end, rather than the beginning of the negotiations… and further confounded by refusal to recognize the Palestine unity leadership now forming insures that negotiations, or the mere suggestion of them, are a farce. Such a blatant display, I again question, is either based solely in stupidity or is a purposeful intent to foment war.

Bibi has been positioning the country for war over the past few months and has been flexing intentional muscle across borders with Lebanon and Syria in the past two weeks. Bibi is facing caravans and flotillas intent on breaking the blockades and freeing Gaza. Bibi is facing refugees tired of encampments and second citizen status. Bibi is facing an onslaught of Nations no longer willing to be idle in the face of Israel’s abuses.. and very willing to support the call for a Palestinian state. The lies and deceit.. the posturing of Presidents with speeches that no longer border on the absurd but have stepped over into the dark side of psychosis will no longer contain the charade of politics and the chase for Jewish payola.

Obama must become aware that the game of words is over. The games of posturing and the money chase are over. He can no longer promise all manner of aid packages to the world to prop up the false folk hero image of a US that cares. Change is coming and it is coming not because of Barack Obama. It is coming in spite of him. Promising jobs to Egypt and elsewhere in order to fool these people into support for more corporate despotism while the US turns to rust and dust will gain only resistance from there and from here. There is not enough support anywhere to sustain US involvement in another war and there is no support for another Israeli war against an unarmed population whether Mr. President supports it or not.

If he is as intelligent as has been claimed, Barack Obama will act swiftly to erase as much as is possible of the portrait he painted of himself with this ridiculous speech. He will act to prevent Israel and the US from causing WWIII (I believe the Intifada, which now has his name on it, is inevitable) I’m not holding my breath for he continues to press Israel (5/23) to accept the 1967 borders with land swaps. I am praying for the people of Palestine who will soon, once again, be brutally assaulted by the sociopathic actions of the Netanyahu government. Their blood will also be on Mr. Obama’s hands.. though I suspect he will make another speech somehow absolving himself.. even making himself out to be a folk hero of sorts….

A Response to Ken O’Keefe

The Egyptian Second Revolution Cometh

M. Dennis Paul, Ph.D. Salem-News.com

Ken,

I hope that your assessment is correct regarding the world following the path presented in this golden example of non-violence. I also hope, at the time I am writing this, that no assaults have occurred in the Square in Cairo.

Our rapidly approaching Flotilla II- Stay Human brings committed people from all over the map to once again show the world that there is strength in non-violence and that compassion respects no artificially constructed borders or barriers. Images to the rest of the world will show that it is only those despots, such as the Netanyahu government, living under an illusion of power and control that is openly and brutally supported by paid thugs and agents, who act out violently against the real hopes and dreams of self determination championed by a hard working, and willing to work, non-violent majority.

Ban Ki Moon and others may beg that these images not be shown to the world so they work behind the scenes using fear and intimidation in an effort to suppress the determination of peaceful protesters. The Egyptian military may refuse protections to unarmed protesters as their means of instilling fear and intimidation and to suppress peaceful actions. Without the face to face meeting of workers for peace and agents of oppression, however, the world is deprived of the real stories behind the lives of the oppressed …and the world, to its inhabitants, are left to the erroneous perception that things are as they should be. They are deprived of the true pictures of corruption, hypocrisy and depravity that so many millions are forced to accept as their lot in life. They remain sheltered, at least for a time, from the potential, and perhaps inevitable, disemboweling of their own lives, hopes and dreams.

Governments and their media would prefer that the only news, the only images, the rest of the world views each day are the briefings, staged by PR agents, on the inner workings of their staff, their boards and their committees working behind closed doors in suites set well above the streets. The only genuine news, the news that informs the world of human struggles to survive and exposes the images of those who create the greatest obstacles to survival, happens on the street… not above it. There is nothing sterile emanating from the streets. It is raw and real. From a board room, one can change the perceptions of a nation. It is often no more than a change of figures who run the same game. From the streets, however, one can change the nation by shutting down the board room.. ending the game.

My personal thanks to you, Ken, (and as always, Tim & Bonnie) for pointing us, anew, to the streets of Cairo and reminding us of the very real dangers as well as the very real power of numbers, non-violence, compassion and conviction.

Readers: Please support the AUDACITY OF HOPE and all of the other peaceful ships bearing committed non-violent passengers, much needed aid for the beautiful people of Palestine, and hope for the entire world by visiting and pledging at http://ie.m2.sl.pt . Please also tweet @whitehouse every day and inform them that the whole world is watching Flotilla II- Stay Human. VIVA PALESTINA!!

45 Years Ago…Today… And I Still See Her Smile And Continue Our Promise

{Reprint from 2014. On May 26, 2016, it will be 47 years since word of Sammi’s death.. murder.. at the hands of the IOF. Not a day goes by that Sammi is absent from my thoughts. At times, her presence weighs heavily in my heart and mind.  Usually, this is in advance of a major assault by Israel upon the beautiful people of Palestine. The past 10 days, I have felt her quite strongly. During this time, the IOF has been threatening Gaza with persistent fly overs and “war games”.  Insiders on both sides are admitting that an assault is imminent.}

45 Years Ago…Today… And I Still See Her Smile And Continue Our Promise

It has been 45 years since I first heard word of the murder by Israeli soldiers of my girlfriend, Samir, and her remaining family in Palestine. Samir was Lebanese-Palestinian, had moved to the US with her family already decreased in size by the IOF and was, at our young age deeply aligned politically with her homeland.  Involved with the Black Panther Party among other radical groups, I was also deeply involved in the Palestinian cause. It was, to my great sadness, her father’s decision to move back to Palestine to help his brother who was struggling.

Word, from a friend,  came through the mail some time after her murder which only added to the devastation it brought.  Despite our separation, the feelings we had for one another were never diminished and we believed, naively, that we would be returned to each other.  Naively as well, we believed Palestine would be free…soon.

Samir was beautiful.  A smile like no other and eyes that brought light to the darkest days we shared.  Not a day has gone by that I have not thought about her seeing her smile and hearing her soothing voice in my mind.  She was my oasis from what was then a horrible family life.  Her father always treated me with respect and even love, knowing my Jewish/Greek background.  I remember fondly the incredible meals he would prepare and the stories he would tell in his comically poor English.

Samir and I promised each other that we would never stop working to free Palestine.  I never have.

I won’t describe her death, and that of her then remaining family.  It was brutal and haunts me to this day.  I write this through tears.

I will never forget what those Israeli bastards did and I doubt that my spirit will ever be at peace.  Every day is filled with what if’s and why’s.  Never answers.

I am forever grateful to the Black Panther Party for taking up solidarity with the Palestinians and their efforts to educate regarding the struggle for liberation.  Out of all the groups with whom I had association, they were the only ones who recognized, fully, the Palestinian cause.

I am forever grateful to Samir for being a part of my life and allowing me to be a part of hers.

I miss her.

To my last breath, I will be for Palestine and her people.  To my last breath, I will hold Samir and her family in my heart.

Viva Palestina!

1 Minute 33 Seconds With Mark Regev Spinning Like a Loaded Dreidel

1 Minute 33 Seconds With Mark Regev

Spinning Like a Loaded Dreidel

by M. Dennis Paul, Ph.D. Salem-News.com

In the Dreidel game, a gambling game played for centuries by Jewish children and elders alike, the rules are quite simple. Desired items are anted into a pot and each player spins the top-like Dreidel. Depending upon the letter facing up when the spin ends, the player wins nothing, half, all, or has to add more to the pot.

Mark Regev, Adviser to the Prime Minister of Israel/International Media, prefers to play with his personal Dreidel…fixed so that his spin (for Israel, of course) always lands on “winner take all”.

Considered one of the world’s most adroit spokespersons, Mark demonstrates a remarkable ability to spin the very worst policies and behaviours of his government in such a manner that his followers are left feeling a sense of sincere accomplishment and benefit from the chaos and destruction these actions create. Viewers who are not predisposed to an affectionate trance induced by his camera-aided sincerity are, of course, more likely to actually hear the astounding, and often totally absurd, twisted reality he so ably cadences in his “speaking directly to you” chats.

In his latest “let me have your ear for a moment” communique, he begins with a deeply expressed wish for the freedom of Gaza. Yes, he tells us, Israel sincerely wants Gaza to be free. He wants Gaza to be free… but most of all, the people of Gaza want to be free. And then he states they can’t, “because Gaza is ruled by a brutal, authoritarian, extreme Islamic regime.. a Taliban style government ..a regime that brutally oppresses the people of Gaza.”. He continues that “It oppresses women, it oppresses gays, it oppresses minorities.. a regime that has destroyed independent media, crushed all political opposition,.. a regime that arrests bloggers in the middle of the night, kills gay people, forces women back into a medieval status…For all these reasons, people who believe in freedom, people who believe in liberty, should be the enemies of the regime in Gaza and should support, really, a free Gaza.” Not missing a beat, he proceeds to invoke the activists working with the people of Gaza and how they physically and politically embrace the Hamas government and asks how, when they call themselves “Human Rights” activists, they embrace the most extreme opponents of human rights. People, he claims, “..oppress, with an iron fist, the civilian population of the Gaza strip”. He ends by stating he believes his questions are legitimate and need to be answered by Freedom Flotilla II-Stay Human.

In 1 minute and 33 seconds, Mark Regev completely rewrites reality so as to impress upon his minions that it is Hamas, and not Israel, that has destroyed the lives and livelihood of the Palestinian people, and that the Free Gaza movement has assisted them in so doing.

Mr. Regev, knowing well that history is often lost on the largest segments of society, leaves the impression that Hamas is, and always has been, the enemy of both the Palestinians and the Jews. It doesn’t matter, to people whose memories are lost, that Hamas actually began, officially, in 1987 or that it was the political manipulations of Israel, in an attempt to find some group other than Fatah (The PLO) with whom they could “negotiate” the Zionist takeover of Palestine, that created an opportunity for the birth of Hamas. So, according to Mr. Regev, Hamas was responsible for the forced migration of Palestinians and all the destruction and death they incurred 40 years before they even existed!!

Yes, it was not an “iron fist” from Israel that decided to embark upon a pogrom stealing thousands upon thousands of hectares of land, surround villages with walls and Jews-only highways, establish checkpoints from which they could deny Palestinians access to needed services, blockade its ocean access, pummel its infrastructure with tons of highly destructive ordinance, sever it air access, eliminate its ability to trade (import and export), and on and on. Those elements were Israel’s “humanitarian” outreach to the civilian population of Gaza. Its genuine attempt to set Gaza free. All of these things began because Israel wanted to free Gaza from the “brutal, authoritarian, extreme Islamic regime”… the one that didn’t exist when Israel started these “humanitarian” efforts.

Placidly accepting that what Mr. Regev says is true, he wins the spin of the Dreidel… and Israel, along with its millions of history deficient supporters, are contented with a “powerful”, emotional pot of hasbara with which to paint Freedom Flotilla II-Stay Human as the antithesis to freedom for the people of Palestine.

Nice game, Mark!

ONE NATION SHOW

{Reprint. How sad that 6 years later, the US “left” opts to support yet another sheepdog for the DNC. Bernie Sanders has made zero effort to lead a genuine movement independent of the Democrats with whom he has voted throughout his career, thus insuring that Americans have no real choice in candidates for President or any other office. He calls himself a Democratic Socialist yet consistently votes against genuine reforms which would steer the country in such a direction. Bernie voted for the New Jim Crow laws put forth by Bill Clinton… imprisoning hundreds of thousands of young black men and women most of whom were sentenced for victimless “crimes” and who, otherwise, could have had at least a small chance of creating some sort of life and possibly holding together now irreparably destroyed families in a nation becoming more racist rather than more enlightened.  He supported illegal wars throughout the Middle East and Africa (despite his one claim of not having voted for Congressional authorization regarding Iraq), fought to have war toys (the most expensive and least effective) parked in Vermont and, among many other serious concerns regarding his thinking, fully stands behind financial support for rogue state Israel and its unrepentant violations of International Law in the suppression and genocide against Palestine. Six years on and the only word that now comes to mind is “bupkis”. }

ONE NATION SHOW

By M. Dennis Paul, Ph.D. Salem-News.com

At no other time in history has it become so essential that an alternative voice emerge. This country and, by the pursuits of this country, the world is facing a terrible crash far worse than what we are now witnessing. The political “left” has always represented that alternative voice. It is a result of that voice that so many socially just programs took root in American politics. Worker protections, economic safety nets, municipal safeguards (notably, as example, fire departments) and much more. Since the 70’s, however, the voice of the “left” has become a feeble whisper.

One of the greatest obstacles to emergence of the “left” in modern national politics is a coherent picture, clear to the American people, of what the left seeks to accomplish. Despite the increasingly obvious failures of capitalism, the American public is media deprived of the information essential in its ability to grasp genuine political and economic alternative. The left, so splintered by its own intellectual disputes and the history of infiltrations of its component groups by both government agent and sincere ideological disputants, has demonstrated an inability to present a united picture of possibility to the public. The terms “left” and “leftist” bring to mind those most ideologically extreme proponents of socialism or communism. The GOP relies on that image and reinforces it with vigor. In truth, there is a very small minority on the left aligned with either a socialist or communist agenda. The vast majority are aligned with principles of humanism, equality, fairness, and justice. Most simply want capitalism absent all its negatives. Americans do not understand the difference.

The die hard out front corporate aligned party, the GOP, is obviously not an option for the left. The more socially conscious yet corporate reliant Democratic Party, being the only other historically recognizable party in American politics, represents a meager alternative for the left. Various attempts to utilize a marketing approach which relies on use of the term “progressive” to integrate the left in mainstream politics have failed in their alignment with the Democratic Party which quickly learned how to absorb the term and its proponents in mobilizing its fragile base. What has occurred is the energizing of the Democrat base through promoting progressive appearing agendas which are quickly discarded once the true objective, getting a “moderate” in power, is achieved. Once in power, the moderate Democrat plays almost exclusively to its corporate masters, even in fronting seemingly progressive ideas such as health care, and the “progressives” are dismissed as malcontents dragging the “Party” down and presenting an obstacle to maintaining power in mid term elections.

Disheartened and confused, the left flounders and either avoids the mid terms by failing to promote fully progressive candidates or simply sits out the election either not voting or voting for Party candidate in hopes that a perceived more damaging GOP candidate will be blocked from office. The thinking that a Democrat in office will be better for the country than a Republican, promoted so heavily by the Party and its sycophant bloggers, sits as a hard choice for the left. They know, in their hearts, that either choice represents no genuine change for America.

On October 2, 2010, America was treated to yet another heavy handed promotion to use the left in pushing for maintaining the power of the Democrats in the mid terms. A wide array of “progressive” organizations mobilized in DC to hear speaker after speaker push social justice agendas, all much needed in our country. However, the over riding message of this event was nothing more than “vote Democrat” … because you have no other alternative if you want anything remotely resembling what the country sorely needs (like jobs).

Should the Democrats pull off a miracle and maintain their power in the mid terms, January will see yet another dismissal of the left and it will be business as usual in America.

Discontent with business as usual has grown since the Bush administration. The corporate think tanks and their capitalist financiers recognized this and created the freakish, yet formidable, Tea Party in order to play off the discontent of Americans with the GOP. Of course, any Tea Party winners in the mid term will fall in line with the wishes of their corporate backers and are, therefore, not a true alternative for change.
Will the left continue to lock themselves into this vicious cycle of promise and negation or will they wake up and fully extricate themselves from the corporate Democratic Party, collectively organize the educational tools that will help America recognize the potential of alternative politics, and promote genuinely progressive candidates in every state?
Should the left rise to the occasion and bring themselves out as an alternative, they would have to do so through the shunning of any corporate appearing support and demonstrate their true objection to business as usual with massive educational campaigns. They will have to be a lot smarter than the Democratic operatives that corralled them into the One Nation promotion and not fall into the traps that would make them into just another say whatever, promise whatever to stay in power party. There are certainly enough left leaning organizations in the US, enough manpower, enough intellectual prowess to create a sufficient platform from which to promote genuinely progressive candidates. Many came together for the One Nation Show. Let’s see if they can come together for themselves and for the country.. instead of the corporate Democratic Party and business as usual.

RACHEL CORRIE WINS!!!

by M. Dennis Paul, Ph.D. Salem-News.com

As expected, Israel granted itself immunity in the Rachel Corrie case. The lesson: One must never expect any sense of integrity or decency from Israeli courts.

The blinders placed upon the heart and soul of Israel, through its mistaken notion of having been chosen as the only true children of god, have covered the eyes of too many generations to ever be opened to light, to reason, to logic, to Truth, Justice and Peace. Those Israelis who have not been fully hypnotized or who suddenly awaken to reality leave Israel in good measure.

A culture that holds itself out to be above all others, no different than the insane mentality that once attempted to impress upon the world that only Aryans had value will, in time, be buried by history.

Each day, the world awakens more to the true Israel. By leaps and bounds, international tolerance for Israel lessens and the weight of time, along with her miles and miles of walls, ludicrous and repressive laws, censorship and lies to cover lies to cover lies, imprisons her.

Israel drove a very large nail into its own coffin this morning. In bringing the light of day to the court which chose cowardice, ignorance, false pride, arrogance and the misguided belief that nothing beyond its own sense of exceptionalism matters in the “big picture”, Rachel Corrie won today. Her death was not in vain. Her bravery, love and passion for Truth, Justice and Peace is remembered today and it echoes across the globe in such a brilliant way that Israel will forever be seen for its disregard of all things human. Pictures of Rachel will cover walls and cars and buses and will be posted and reposted wherever Israelis have eyes.

Those who live within the self constructed and ever increasing barriers of Israel, and who will have their consciences tweaked by the pictures of Rachel, knowing that Israel murdered her, knowing that Israel imprisons thousands without true charges, knowing that Israel tortures and maims children without remorse, knowing that Israel indiscriminately murders Arabs for no other reason than that they are non-Jews, have a duty to themselves. Depose Zionism, tear down the walls, return the stolen lands to their rightful inhabitants, forever ban apartheid, trample out any sense of exceptionalism.. of being chosen to ride above all others… and join the world community…..OR… pass away as history blows across the desert and leaves Israel for future generations to excavate and wonder.

What now, Israel? Will you adopt a Muppet like character, call him Moishe Oofnik, paste him all over a pamphlet obviously designed to instill hatred and fear into children, place it in every mailbox warning all how little time they have once you begin your insane racist rampage against Iran and Syria and Lebanon and Palestine, to get into their bunkers? Oh… already in the mail, eh? Sick!

Israel… The Louse That Roared

BDS…  No matter how loudly the Kings of Israel declare BDS to be a non-issue, the fact remains it scares the excrement from their wretched bodies.

In the past few years, Israel has commissioned studies, convened think tanks and committees and passed legislation in a pathetic attempt to block the inevitable effects of a program specifically geared toward forcing an end to the all too obvious apartheid antics of this US teat addict.  Israel spends large sums of money through its lobbies and wealthy (and quite decrepit) million and billionaires buying the cheap loyalties of politicians around the world (especially in the United Snakes and Hardly Great Britain) who, in servitude, submit (and sometimes pass) legislation that seek to make BDS illegal… or at the very least, punishable by some futile economic tit-for-tat maneuver.

Colleges and other institutions are regularly threatened with funding cuts, lawsuits and other “methods” should they not employ Orwellian curtailment of free speech regarding student efforts to enlist colleges in boycotting & divesting from Israeli companies supporting apartheid and illegal settlements.

Professor Steven Salaita was recently reinstated having won a lawsuit against the University of Illinois after being dismissed (an act condoned by Dem. Sen, Dick Durbin) for expressing his opinions regarding the brutality of Israel against Palestinians in their 2014 assault.

California Dem. Sen. Diane Feinstein and her husband, war profiteer Richard Blum, have actually threatened UC Board of Regents with public harassment should they fail to enact draconian codes prohibiting and punishing free speech based on their perverted opinions regarding the falsely constructed premise of “antisemitism”… one which defines BDS as “anti-Jew”, as well any reflections upon Israel’s political, cultural and internationally recognized as criminal activities in the Middle East… especially, but not exclusively, any comparisons to the criminal activities of Nazis.  There is no doubt that Feinstein and her murder reliant hubby, Blum,  are incensed regarding the consistent resolutions passed over the years in favor of divestment from Israel’s apartheid machinery.  Postponed several times, a new version of the code is expected to be offered in March of this year.

Notheastern University punished their SJP (Students For Justice in Palestine) for an act conducted without University retribution at numerous other institutions across the country… Disseminating a mock eviction notice modeled on those issued by Israel to Palestinians.  Suspended, the SJP chapter was later reinstated.

This is a short sampling of the attempts made by the agents of Israel to curtail free speech where it effects only Israel.  Israel could care less if speech denigrates Palestinians, Iranians, Syrians, Yemenites, etc.  In fact, Israel encourages such things and actually pays Congressmen and Senators to disparage these nations and vote for and support illegal wars against them.

Rep. Sen. Tom Cotton (Ark) received $960,250.00 (“for his Senatorial campaign”) from far-right Emergency Committee for Israel (US) which resulted in his orchestrating a letter signed by 47 Rep. lawmakers attempting to sway votes against the Bill and warn Iran that a future Republican administration (post Obama) would do all it could to squash the deal with Iran and reinstate , and perhaps enhance, sanctions.

Israel sponsors, through its minion lobbies and  “funds”, numerous junkets (all expense paid) for incoming lawmakers as well as candidates it feels certain it can sway toward working for Israel while pretending to work for (and still being paid by) the US.

In election years, Presidential candidates make pilgrimage  to the courts of the billionaires such as Haim Saban and Sheldon Adelson as well to the royal seat of Benyamin “Bibi the Bull” Netanyahu.  Every last one of them desperately seeking far more than a mere photo-op.  The blessings sought are stacks of green paper which they will use for campaigns and lining their pockets.. for which they will gladly sell their souls and sell out their constituencies.

This election season, the cash emboldened cries of the candidates are gushing praises and pledges of support for all things Israel… and especially enacting legislation to stop the BDS movement.  All for naught, as this movement is in the command of minds and people which cannot be stopped by pieces of paper.

Social media fuels the BDS movement and the wallet sustains its efforts as more and more people refuse to purchase apartheid produced Israel products.  Too, the world is reaching a tipping point of tolerance for the brutality, greed and avarice of Israel.  Nations are lining up against flagrant international scofflaw, Israel, and recognizing the rights of Palestine to exist and prosper.

Israel’s economic bottom lines are rapidly dropping and the losses are now undeniably large and looming larger.  Businesses that previously have exploited the labor of Palestinians at factories within the illegal settlements are both moving operations and selling them to escape the writing on the apartheid walls.

The EU, in a small measure, recently enacted its labeling requirements forcing companies within the illegal settlements to label the origin of their products.  In a desperate attempt to counter this, new legislation is being proposed which would require EU product manufacturers, who support the BDS movement and labeling of illegal settlement products, to label their products as being manufactured by BDS supporters.  Quite likely, rather than work for illegitimate Israeli businesses, this effort will backfire against them as EU businesses will simply cease importing all Israeli products (yes, Israel, they will create more jobs in their own countries by manufacturing in their own countries) and cease exporting to Israel ( yes Israel, you are a limited market and not as important to the world as your fantasies dictate).  Please do enact your fool’s legislation. Vote yes … and vote often!

BDS is working so well, Israel is turning into a nation of droolers.  Tissue?
